The city of Kosice, in terms of its size and importance in
the Slovak Republic, classifies just after the capital Bratislava. It is located
in the south-east of
Slovakia,
not far from the borders with Hungary (20km), Ukraine (80km) and Poland (90km).
The advantage of this location is to be in the centre of important domestic and
international transport routes. Therefore are excellent preconditions for good
commercial connectivity, that is presented by the railway junction and
the
international airport.
The city of Kosice covers the Kosice Basin formed by the valley of the River
Hornad. To the west lie the ridges of the Slovakian Ore Mountains and to the
east the Salt Hills. The city centre is situated at 208 metres above sea-level.
The climate in Kosice is moderately warm, with fairly hot summers and cold
winters.
Kosice has plenty of
job
opportunities for its strong economic background. The
biggest and most important company of the city is the U. S. Steel Kosice, the
largest fully integrated, flat-rolled steel producer in Central Europe. Since
the Slovak Republic joined the European Union, many foreign companies decided to
bring their business to Kosice: as T-Systems Slovakia, Siemens PSE, NESS
Slovakia, VSE IT Services, Cisco Systems Slovakia, Microsoft Slovakia, IDS
Scheer Slovakia. High demand for professionals in Information Technology makes
Kosice a stable place for progress in carriers.
In Kosice the education system is well represented and very efficient. There are
almost 50 primary schools, 10 grammar schools, 4 commercial academies, and 15
specialized secondary schools covering industrial technologies, agriculture,
health care and the arts. In Kosice there are several universities: the
Technical University (has 8 faculties), P.J.Šafárik University (has 4
faculties), the University of Veterinary Medicine and the University of
Economics.
Public transport in the city is well organized, bus time-tables are present
at every bus stop. Public transport network is devided into three tariff zones:
I. zone covers territory of districts of Kosice I,II,III,IV.
II. zone covers territory of Kosice-Saca.
III. zone covers territory of Kosice surroundings.
One shot tickets are valid only as one way single tickets without changing
vehicle. Season tickets can be used for one person for all lines (night
lines inclusive) in the period and in the zone for which they are designated
(monthly, quarterly tickets).
