The Historical Center of Kosice
Kosice's historical Old Town is worth while a trip. The reconstruated Main street (Hlavna Ulica) has maintained its
character from the Middle Ages, runs from south to north, through flows a little creek and is considered to be one
of the most spectacular in Slovakia.
At the southern end of the Main street (Hlavna ulica) is the Square of Freedom (Namestie Slobody) and under it can
be found the Archeological Komplex, an underground museum containing the original city walls, dating back to the 13th century.
Walking north, visitors can admire the newly reconstruated St. Michael's Chapel, built in the first half of the 14th century,
originally as a cemetery chapel.
Next to the chapel, in the heart of the Main Street, towers the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth, the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe,
and the largest in Slovakia. Has a very rich history and in its interior artistically valuable masterpieces and relics.
Continuing north just after the cathedral stands the Urban's Tower, originally the city's free standing bell tower, which now
houses a wax museum of famous Slovaks. It takes just a few meters to be able to relax in front of the Singing Fountain and surrounding park.
The fountain attracts adults and children alike with jets of water that shoot up for the rythm of the music, accompanied
by colored lights at night.
Retracing your steps and continuing north on the Main Street will allow you to see many other attractions as
the representative building of the State Theater, built in Neo-baroque style, or the Immaculata otherwise
the Plague Column that commemorates the end of the plague of 1710-1711, and a handful of lovely minor palaces.
At the northern tip of this route is The Peace Marathon Square (Namestie Maratonu mieru) where is the statue of the Marathoner,
the symbol of the International Peace Marathon that is organized here every autumn, and opposite is the East Slovak Museum,
featuring the Golden Treasures of Kosice, a collection of golden coins and medals from the 15th century.
In the Old Town there are many hotels, restaurants, shops, cafes, bars and pubs.
